On this week’s edition of Custom Action Figures: 101, we have an interview with Dacre Bush. Dacre grew up with art all around him as his parents owned an art gallery that sold art for children’s books. He always loved drawing and painting and started painting modern G.I. Joe figures in 2009. Dacre doesn’t want to been seen as any particular type of customizer so he has always asked other customizers to help him improve his skills. He was a founding member of OG13.com and a senior member of Mayhem Customs. He has made over 130 figures for charity. Dacre says he would love to be able to design figures for a living, but for now he just enjoys this hobby immensely.
Without further adieu , here’s my interview with Dacre Bush…
Rob Panick – First off, as I always ask fellow customizers, how long have you been customizing and what got you started?
Dacre Bush – It really started when I was a kid and I discovered that G.I. Joe’s had screws in their backs and legs and I could mix the parts to make new G.I. Joe’s. I started painting them in 2010 and haven’t stopped since.
RP – What’s your favorite figures to customize?
DB – Mainly I use G.I. Joe’s and Marvel Universe figures, but I’ve been trying to explore other realms of customization.
RP – What’s your workspace like?
DB – Organized Chaos. I wish I had more space, but happy to have any space to express my art. I’m pretty lucky to have an amazing wife who has allowed me to basically take over half of the basement to work on toys.
RP – What paints and brushes do you use?
DB – When I started I had no idea what to use and I tried to use Testors Enamel, but then I realized that was a no-no. I then started using Tamiya, because a local hobby store had them for only $2.50 a bottle, but they tend to separate. I then tried Vallejo, which is great for whites and reds and even flesh tones, but they can sometimes chip off. So I’ve found a great paint in Citadel, which is a little more expensive, but the quality is definitely there.
RP – If you could give advice to someone who is brand new to customizing, what would it be?
DB – Don’t be afraid to ask for help and research videos and tutorials on how to create customs. Don’t give up and practicing! The biggest lesson I learned in my art classes, was that a painting is never finished to an artist…
RP – Give us your best “secret trick” you use when customizing.
DB – When painting eyes I paint the eye black first before adding the white of the sclera and I flip the head upside down when painting the right eye.
RP – What other things are you into besides customizing?
DB – I collect and build Gundam model kits, plus I’ve started collecting Transformers.
Now, I’ll consult my handy dandy randomizer for the next three questions:
RP – What is your earliest memory?
DB – Earliest memory was when I was about 16 months and in a car seat waiting to pick up my dad from work. Earliest toy memory was when we had some Japanese exchange students over during Christmas when I was about 2 and they gave me a transforming gold lighter robot, which I still have to this day.
RP – Are there any funny stories your family tells about you that come to mind?
DB – Too many…
RP – For your great great grandchildren reading this years from now: is there any wisdom you’d want to pass on to them? What would you want them to know?
DB – Stay focused and never give up your dreams…
